A Makeover & New Deals at The Arsenal

The Arsenal, an LA bar that’s been around since 1950 on Pico, used to be a total dive bar… but we love dive bars, so this was no issue to us.

However, makeovers are always fun so we also had no issue when we heard The Arsenal decided to have some work done. And not a little nip here, a little tuck there. No, the Arsenal went all out Demi Moore style and did the full remodel package.

The Grand Re-Opening party for the Arsenal was last Friday (sorry we didn’t tell you – we wanted to have it allll to ourselves!) BUT they are keeping the celebration going every night from 7-9pm until this Thursday, the 28th, by offering select food and drinks off the original 1950s menu for 1950s prices!! (No idea what 1950s prices might be? Think $1.50 glass of champagne, $2.95 New York Steaks, $0.65 Burger or Grilled Cheese Sandwich – crazy right?!)

.

So what else is new at the Arsenal? Well, like we said the decor got an update (see above snazzy photo from Elizabeth Daniels ): while the original dining room is still mostly intact, the bar and the patio have been totally redone and there are new TVs all over (even outside on the patio!)

There’s also going to be a new menu of foods (multiple types of Mac ‘N Cheese, Pizzas, Burgers, and Poutine Fries YUM) and some new drinks added to the cocktail menu on top of the old favorites.

.

But the best part of The Arsenals re-debut is the new happy hour menu!

The Arsenal Happier Happy Hour:

* When: Mon – Fri, 5-8pm (+ 6-9pm on Saturdays)

* What: 1/2 Off Beers, $3 Wine, $3 Wells, & Happy Hour priced sliders, pizza, and mac n cheese!

….

That’s not it folks – no there are MORE fabulous prizes drink&food deals that happen nightly at the Arsenal:

* Mondays: Monday Night Football Happy Hour – same as the usual but lasts until game ends. PLUS at late night HH from 10pm – 1am.

* Tuesdays: “Rock Night” $3 Vodka Martinis, $2 Mixed Vodka Shots + DJ Goldylox starts at 10pm

* Wednesdays: $1.50 Sliders from 8-10pm + Late Night HH 10pm – 1am

The Parlor on Melrose UPDATE

UPDATE: 8/18/10: Click Here for Info on Deals at The Parlor Hollywood on Melrose

UPDATE: 6/12/10: The Parlor on Melrose is OPEN for select World Cup games. Grand Opening on 6/23/10! The revamp looks GREAT, we’ll report more details w/ photos next week.

.

With all the sunshine and Laker games goin on lately we’ve really been missing El Guapo on Melrose. It used to be our go-to spot for sports+sunshine+beer pong+90210 reminiscing.

Then when we found out about The Parlor’s take over of the old Guap spot a couple months ago we got incredibly excited and have been eagerly awaiting its opening ever since.

Well looks like the wait is almost over because our ‘insider’ at The Parlor (read: owner) told us that the new Parlor location should be open in a couple weeks!

YAY!

We’re hoping this means we’ll be able to return to our fav sun/sports spot by the weekend of June 12th.

Either way we’ll keep you updated on the Grand Opening information as we find out.

Westwood Happy Hour Alert

Last time we went out in Westwood we got laughed at. Who the hell, other than UCLA kids, goes out in Westwood?! And where do you go? Maloneys? Chilis? Right….

No, that’s simply not appropriate for post grad USC alums.

(For the record we had attended an event at the W and wanted to continue drinking so we hit up Westwood Brew Co… really it was the only respectable option at the time and they had delish mini corn dogs…)

Well now we can go out in Westwood without wearing a cloak of shame because The Glendon has opened and it’s wonderfully kinda-adult, not decked out in Bruin paraphernalia, and has a daily HAPPY HOUR.

M-F, 4pm – 7pm

$4 Wine, $5 Well Cocktails, $5 Select Martinis, $5 Craft Beers, 1/2 off Apps

Best part of this happy hour: you can make reservations for tables!

Unfortunately, we learned about the resy rule too late and after showing up at 6pm waited until 7:05pm to be seated (thus missing Happy Hour food specials entirely.) But at least we got to drink! The $5 Lemon Drop martini was fresh, not overly sweet, and delicious. The boys we arrived with ordered beers & well drinks and seemed pleased with the $5 price tag as well.

Mac&Cheese, Crab Cakes, & Guiness

Despite having to pay full price for food we ordered off the app menu anyway – getting the crab cakes and mac n’ cheese (see amazingly wonderful and professional looking Blackberry photography above.) Mac & Cheese (with bacon of course) was good but not rich enough for my taste, even with the bacon. The crab cakes were pretty good and came with a little avacado ganache, which was great.

In the end it cost a little more than we planned on spending on apps but whatever – we learned our lesson and will return WITH A RESERVATION next time.

Adios El Guapo… Hello The Parlor!

UPDATE 8/18/10: Click here for details on Happy Hour at the new Parlor location on Melrose!

When I first moved to LA the most important thing on my ‘LA to do list’ was to locate all the 90210 filming locations.

* Peach Pit – Stage. (Built based off facade of ‘Rose City Diner’ in Pasadena, which has since been torn down)

* Bel-Age Hotel – Check. (Before it became the London, I stayed at the Bel-Age before my apartment was ready when I first moved to the city… wished the room came along with a Dylan McCay of my very own.)

* Beach Condo – Check. Even met a tenant (PE Teacher named Phyz Ed, no joke) and wrote ‘Marry Me Donna’ in the sand.

El Guapo / Now-Wear-This / Future ParlorHW Location

So when my sister told me she knew the location of Donna’s store I was stoked. A new spot to visit where I can pretend I’m Kelly Taylor! (…though hopefully I avoid all the crazy stabbings, rapes, etc…)

But holy shit was I excited when I realized Donna’s store had since been converted into a giant bar – El Guapo. Guapo was great: big venue, two bars, lots of TVs for sports, outside patio, and Beer Pong. Yes, the food was atrocious, but Bud-Light luckily runs pretty standard no matter the bar you’re at and how often do you get the chance to revel in the glory of 90210 WHILE you’re getting drunk and playing beer pong?

Many of you who were regulars of El Guapo probably already know that it has since closed.
No idea why but we’re definitely not happy about it.
.

Good news is:

The Parlor (a Santa Monica fav) has swooped up the old El Guapo space!

(Just temporary possession right now…)

Yay!

We think this is the perfect replacement for Guapo. Same venue, same TVs for sports… just with better food. I wonder if they’ll keep the beer pong too…

We’ll keep you posted on more details as we learn them. The opening is a ways off at this point but we can only hope it’s ready for summer drinking on the patio… and hopefully they have some great Happy Hours!

Whats Up in the Hood – Downtown Edition

Back in the good ‘ol USC days we lived Downtown… and we hated living there. There was no close grocery store, only a handful of decent bars and restaurants, and we felt so alienated from all the ‘cool’ people on the west side.

Since then Downtown is like a whole new world (cue flying carpet + Aladdin + Jasmine). There’s a snazzy Ralphs, LALive, inhabitants other than USC & FIDM students, and tons of great restaurants and bars seem to be opening every day.

Here’s the low down on a few new spots that are coming to Downtown this year (writing low-down makes me feel like a gangsta):

* FIRST & HOPE (710 W. 1st Sreet), Opening March/April 2010.
Arc Deco Styled 1940s Supper Club with Old Fashioned Drinks

* BIG WANGS DOWNTOWN (8th and Grand), Opening Soon.
Same cheezy bar as in Hollywood.

* LOFT BAR (451 S. Main Street), Opening May/June 2010.
Huge 6277 sq ft. pool hall and bar, full liquor.

* LAS PERLAS (103 E. 6th Street), Opening Mid February 2010
Tequila, Mezcal, and Mexican Cerveza Bar

* LAZY OX CANTEEN (241 S. Pedro Street), Opened Dec. 2009
Little Tokyo ‘Casual Dining Spot’, everything under $25, Wine/Beer.

Drink Up Downtown.

Arriba, Abajo….

10/22/10: Rumor is, Borracho is throwing in the towel and closing soon.

So don’t count on it to be your go-to happy hour spot in the future.

….you will end up Borracho

New Happy Hour spot!  Opening today (soft opening, I believe), is a new restaurant/bar on Sunset: Borracho Cantina.  It is located closer to sunset plaza, near Ketchup, in the spot formerly occupied by Tony’s Steakhouse.

Borracho literally means drunk in espanol, and I am already sold on this place for that fact alone.

They have daily happy hours from 3-6pm AND a late night happy hour again from 10pm-1am.  A perfect spot to grab a late bite and drink before heading out around the Sunset area. The menu sounds like a new twist on classic Mexican favorites, including pomegranate guacamole with queso fresco (how good does that sound?). And if you are in the mood to watch Mark Sanchez in all his glory this weekend, they have 10 tvs on the patio so is a good place to catch the game as well.

Quick Note on Melgard Public House

Just a quick tidbit:

Following up on yesterday’s note about new bars opening up in the area – Melgard Public House (7505 Melrose) has announced (via Urban Daddy) they will be holding a soft opening this Saturday.

They will be offering free food  (pizza, maybe burgers too…) but no beer or wine until their license transfers over next week. There will be an outside patio opening up too in a couple weeks (construction not quite complete yet).

If you’re cool with just free food head over Saturday – otherwise we’d recommend waiting a couple weeks until you can get the full food/booze/patio experience.

Coming Attractions

Just last year we were talking amongst our friends, nursing our hangovers from the day before over brunch,  WISHING there were more nice sports/beer bars in Los Angeles. At the time it seemed all LA was good for was Clubs/Lounges and sleazy bars (not that we don’t love spots like Backstage Culver City – karaoke, drinks, Seahawks fans – what’s not to love?).

Now it seems nice sports bars and burger/beer joints are popping up everywhere around our LA neighborhood. If only we had the foresight, and funds, to open our own! With our expertise in booze and fun times we’d be gazillionaires if we owned a bar…

Here’s a few new spots opening in the next couple months you should keep your eyes out for:

* Melgard Public House (7505 Melrose Ave.) – Opening next week in former Louise’s Trattoria Spot. Easy American food, tons of beers on tap, and lots of flat screen TVs (From the guy who owns 3rd Stop and 1739 Public House)

* The Surly Goat (7929 Santa Monica Blvd) – Opening soon. Main focus of the Surly Goat will be craft beers – and tons of them.  (From the guy who started BoHo and Bar Delux, was expected to open in 2009 but, accordingly to EaterLA, ran into liquor license problems….)

* Name TBDLAist reports a new Gastropub is expected to open just north of Golden State on Fairfax in a few months. More details to come…

* Locals Sports Bar & Grill (5047 W. Pico) – Just Opened! TVs, Beer/Wine/Liquor, ‘Fresh’ Bar Food (Whatever that means…)

* Capitol City (1615 Cahuenga) – Opened Sept. 2009 in former Goa spot. Lots of TVs, 60 Beers on Tap + Wine + Full Liqour, Two Stories, and Dance Floor/DJ Set up at back outside patio.
