XBar Happy Hour

If we worked in that big sexy Gensler designed CAA headquarters building, we would go across the street to Xbar for happy hour every day.

As you know, or should know, we love hotel bars. Hotel bars with happy hours? Those take the cake. Hotel bars with DAILY late night happy hours (11:30pm – 12:30pm)? Holycrapijustpeedmypantswithexcitement. Heck, we’d even consider sticking it out at work and putting in some extra hours just to be around for Xbar’s late night happy hour too. Okay, scratch that, you know us better than that. We’d more likely ditch work early to go to the 1st happy hour, then go buzzed shopping at Bloomies, only to return to Xbar just in time for a night cap. Perrrrfection.

X Bar Happy Hour(s)

When: Mon-Fri, 4-6:30PM + Daily 11:30pm-12:30am

What: Half Off Drafts, Wells, Wines + Apps (Yup, 50% off all that good stuff.)

.

Hotel bars are such an interesting place to booze. The scene is always a mix of local business people, tourists, and business travelers. Sometimes some working ladies sneak their way into the mix to ‘service’ the business travelers. We’ve seen marriage proposals, the inking of movie deals, drunk celebs, and the standard gawking old man sitting alone with his scotch watching the talent walk by. Overall, it’s a fun scene, but typically a pricey one. Happy hour sweetens that scene oh so much.

Wednesdays at The Beverly Hills Hotel

The Beverly Hills Hotel is a pretty fantastic spot, that is, if you’ve got $500 a night to blow on a room and another couple hundo to throw down for dinner at the Polo Lounge (which really is more about the people watching than the food.) Obviously, not your standard FinerThings drunk+fat on-the-cheap scene. But for the 90210 elite, the bar at the hotel, Nineteen12, serves as the local watering hole where late night meals of $24 chopped salads are enjoyed, deals are made, oldies flaunt their latest cougars-in-training, and exorbitant numbers of $20++ glasses of wine are consumed. We’ve been a few times (under the benevolence of others) and its a very entertaining, albeit expensive, scene.

For those that want a sneak peak at the lifestyles of the rich and famous for a little less scrilla, we recommend hitting up Bar Nineteen12 on a Wednesday where they feature 50% off select bottles of wine (I’m sure they are still on the pricier side, but you must consider the entertainment + people watching factor into the value equation.)

Wine Down Wednesdays

Where: Bar Nineteen12 at The Beverly Hills Hotel

What: Live Music + 50% off Select Bottles of Wine + Free Truffle PopCorn & Olives

Truffle popcorn to nosh on sounds right up our alley, and when you’re only eating that and some olives, the bang for your buck with that wine is sure to go further than expected (i.e. drunk after 2 glasses.) Plus with the live music, we might be talking about a new alternative to our current hotel bar favorite – The Windows Lounge at the Four Seasons (which also serves delicious free snacks, live music, but no 50% deal on wine!)

And for those with a hot bod looking for a new significant other to invest in their lifestyle (or at least pay for your $24 McCarthy salad), this would be good hunting grounds.

Delphine Happy Hour

It wasn’t until V and I started this blog that I actually started enjoying seafood. I’ve always been one to give anything a shot, but seafood just never did it for me. Prawns, those were pretty good. But the smell and taste of Pike Place Market that comes along with much seafood made me nauseous.

Then I started eating seafood that was actually prepared well (what a concept!) and WOAH – this shit is pretty good!

Thankfully this revelation came in time for me to enjoy happy hour at Delphine – a happy hour filled with luxurious and discounted sea critters as well as some pretty good land dwelling foods & tasty drinks:

.

.

While I’m enjoying a few glasses of $5 wine & some yummy $1 mussels – we all know V will be chowing down on the burger.

And add to all this wonderful cheap boozing and eating (in a pretty swank locale I might add): an all night raw bar happy hour on Monday’s (TONIGHT!) with more delicious $5 wine? I mean, even if I don’t end up enjoying their preparation of the shell fish I can always resort to a liquid dinner and possibly a handful of prawns, right?

.

Need more proof of how amazing this happy hour is? Check out the Vixen’s review – the photos already have me hungry and fiending for a cocktail.

Ho-Tel, Mo-tel, Holiday Innnn 2010

If your girl starts actin’ up – then you take her friend!

(Yeah I’m sure that will go over well – your girl is being a biotch so the best way to remedy the situation is hit on her friend… Right… not to mention: if the ‘friend’ accepts she is obviously not a friend at all… stupid male fantasies…)

ANYWAY

It’s getting hot out. Hottness means it’s time for pools, sexy cabana boys/girls, and froo-froo drinks.

Happiness is...

Here’s our guide on our favorite spots to enjoy the sun/sunset while sipping on a few delicious, umbrella accessorized, cocktails and stare at the meat by the hotel pool. Since you know we love saving dinero while we drink – each spot included on the list has some great Summer drink/food specials!

.

MONDAYS:

Viceroy, Cameo Bar Happy Hour, 5pm – 7pm (Mon – Fri), Drinks+Food $5-$9/ea

Great scene, cool style aesthetic, and a good starting point for your bar hopping on Main Street in SaMo. Happy hour deals are valid inside at the Cameo Bar as well as poolside. (As of 3/31/11 this deal was still valid)

.

TUESDAYS:

Avalon BH, ‘SALUTE’ Poolside Happy Hour 5pm – 9pm (Tues & Thurs):  1/2 off Bar Menu!

Join the Avalon every Tuesday and Thursday for a long lasting happy hour by the pool! The drink deals are great, the Kelly Wearstler designed hotel has funky+cool style, and the poolside ‘scenery’ is beautiful. Happy hour is also offered from 5pm – 7pm Monday, Wednesday, & Friday, with $25 bottles of wine offered on Sundays. (Olivero still has HH M-F, 5-7. No longer list the late night happy hours on Tue/Thurs on the website though.)

.

THURSDAYS:

Peninsula Beverly Hills, Rooftop Garden 5pm – 7pm: 1/2 off Drinks + Free Valet!

We held a ‘swanky but skanky’ event here once, but in the end I think we’re a little to déclassé for this upper-crust spot (spot was a little too swanky, us: a little too skanky). But maybe you can keep it in line long enough to enjoy a discounted cocktail and a pretty view? Who knows – you may meet your Sugar Daddy/Momma here… just remember to thank us for it later! (2011: Deal no longer valid, check back during the summer)

.

FRIDAYS:

Ditch Day @ Shangrila, 1pm – 7pm Poolside: Live Music + $5 Cocktails + $5 Menu Items

Your job is a joke. They definitely won’t miss you if you skipped out at lunch time. So what better way to enjoy the afternoon than with a cocktail by the beach? You know we’re right…(2011: Deal no longer valid, check back during the summer)

.
SATURDAYS:

W Westwood, ‘ESCAPE’ with Disaronno 7pm – 10pm (Thurs. – Sat., Starts May 29th)

Join the W for a pool party & cocktail tasting with Disaronno!  Tastings occur from 7pm – 8pm every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday starting May 29th (and ending September 4th) and entrance is free. Stay past the tasting for a lively pool party that goes til 10pm. Or show up before the party for the W’s Saturday ‘Backyard BBQ’ (12pm – 5pm). Reservations strongly recommended. (2011: Deal no longer valid, check back during the summer)

Standard Downtown, Saturday Pool Parties 1pm – 8pm

Are you the kinda kid that ‘knows the DJ’ or is buds with the promoter? Then this is your spot on Saturday. Every weekend the deals change (depending on which promoter is handling the event) but last summer deals included free Jello shots and discounted bottles of champagne. Just make sure you talk to your ‘cousin’ first to get you on the list so you don’t have to wait in that silly line. (2011: Deal no longer valid, check back during the summer)

Our New Favorite Thursday Happy Hour

.**

***4/2011: Deal No Longer Available, Though Plans are Apparently in the Works for Some New Deals so Stay Tuned for More Info, and Cross Your Fingers That Whatever They Come Up with is as Good as This One Was!!***

.

When evaluating a happy hour deal we like to look for the following:

1. Great Deals on Drinks (i.e. ability to get drunk on the cheap)

2. Great Deals on Food (i.e. ability to get fat on the cheap)

3. Great Atmosphere (i.e. willingness to tolerate our loud boisterous drunken friends)

.

Basically – on Thursday nights the Checkers Downtown has all of these things.

Every Thursday, from 4-8pm Checkers Downtown features FOUR: a special happy hour that features a menu of food and drink items for just $4/ea. (For some reason the below flyer mentions food items at $4-$6 but they were all just $4 at our visit).

We had some time to kill before an event downtown last Thursday so we found it the perfect opportunity to try out FOUR for ourselves. The menu from our visit can be seen here.

LaDiDaDi We Likes to Party

This Thursday, February 11th, the W Hotel LA (Westwood) is hosting a party with Virgin America.

Party starts at 7:00pm and there will be free ‘botanical beverages’ from Pinky Vodka served until 8:00pm. I’m sure there will be a nice long line at the bar to get the free drinks (either that or the server’s trays will empty quickly) so practice your skills at ‘ordering drinks for friends’ and double/triple/quadruple fisting-it once you’ve gotten your drink order.
There will also be some gratis bites of food making their way around the room.
(Since many times these events happen when I’d normally be eating dinner, and thus starving, I’m a pro at staking out the kitchen exit from which all the servers originate to snatch up snacks first.)
And if you’re feeling lucky – enter their drawing to win airfare and accommodations for two (compliments of Virgin and W).
See you there!

Expensive… But Worth It

This is in no way a ‘deal alert’. This place is expensive (i.e. the $12/beer, $19/martini kind of expensive…) However, if you limit yourself to one drink, or you toss a few back at home before you head here, this place is definitely worth the money.

The Place: Four Seasons Beverly Hills (300 S. Doheny Dr.)
.
The Time: Thursday – Sunday nights in the Windows Lounge.
.
The Reasoning: There’s a live band and they are great. The lead singer rotates throughout the weekend but the guy who is there Thursday nights (tonight!), who also plays guitar, is amazing.
.
You feel swank as soon as you arrive here – a great high-end lounge feel. And you really never know who will be in the crowd on any given night. One night we had a friend buddy-ing it up with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Stanley Tucci, another time we made friends with an exec from William Morris, and last year we watched James Brown’s son cut a rug to the band’s rendition of ‘It’s a Man’s World’ (We highly recommend you request they sing this – its their best number).
.
And the snacks must be mentioned – not beer nuts – but when you order a drink you’ll get a selection of snacks: fried snap peas, sesame snack mix, and terra chips. The waiters recognize us at this point and usually fill our trays with just the snap peas – our favorite by far. (Wow we sound like cheap dorks getting excited over bar snacks…)
.
We’ve taken friends, parents, and dates here before for after dinner drinks and just about everyone has had a great time. So have a few glasses of wine at dinner then head over here for your $12 Stella… you will not regret it.
.
.
(Warning: consuming copious amounts of alcohol before you arrive at the Four Seasons may impair your judgment and result in the purchasing of multiple $15 rounds of booze… don’t say we didn’t warn you…)
