Melrose Night

For those of you still grumbling that the lines at the Santa Anita Food Truck Fest were too long, here is another chance to catch some of your favorite trucks in action and all in the same vicinity.  And, as an added bonus, you will be able to score some discounts at your favorite stores as well!  So what is this magical night of shopping and food trucks? Melrose Night!

Melrose Night launched in January and will be held on the first Thursday of every month (read: TONIGHT).  Melrose Night runs from 6-10pm and encompasses the area on Melrose between Stanley (where the Urban Outfitters is) and Ogden.  So close to us! Love it.

There will usually be around 8-10 participating food trucks.  Tonight’s trucks include: Buttermilk Truck (which will definitely be my first stop), Coolhaus, Dim Sum Truck (giving away a free sesame ball tonight with any order), Frysmith, Dosa Truck ($1 off promo on every combo for the night), India Jones, Komodo, Papas Tapas, Nom Nom, and of course everyone’s favorite, the Ludo truck.

And, after you are nice and full from your food truck eats, stick around for some one night only shopping deals at stores in the area.  You can get 10% off your purchases at any of the following stores tonight: Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, Sportie LA, and Suru.  Goorin Brothers will give you 15% and you can get 20% off at The Originators.  If you’re a guy and need some grooming, 360 Atelier also has an amazing deal for the night, $50 will get you a shampoo, cut, facial cleanse and 15 minute mini-massage.  Not too shabby!

The one thing that you probably noticed missing from the night is booze, but thankfully a few of our favorite happy hours are on Melrose.  Duck into 8oz for their regular or late night happy hour,  hit up Froma from 4-7pm for a $5 glass if wine, or stop in at Comme Ca for some discounted wine and $6 specialty cocktails.

For more info on Melrose Night and to see which trucks+shopping deals will be featured each month, check out the official website at www.melrosenight.com.

Santa Anita Food Truck Fest!

I know they aren’t news anymore and there are sooo many food trucks out there now, but I, for one, am still just as fascinated and in love with food trucks as I was when they first hit the scene.   Food trucks are the reason I even attend many events (i.e. artwalk), I just can’t help myself when I know I will be able to nibble on some short-rib grilled cheese only to be able to walk to the left a few feet and wash it down with some gourmet ice cream and a large milk tea boba.  Well, now I’m hungry and craving food truck food.

Anyways, if you are like me in your food-truck adoration, then I have plans for you this Saturday, the 2011 Food Truck Festival at Santa Anita Racetrack.  I believe it is the first food truck fest in LA for 2011!

image from santaanita.com

The Food Truck fest is this Saturday, January 29th and will run from 11:00am-4:30pm at the infield of the race track with the horses running around you.  Most all of our favorite food trucks are going to be there (Grilled Cheese Truck, The Sweets Truck, Lardon, Crepe’n Around, and newcomer NaanStop), plus there will be a wine and booze tent (yay!).

Tickets are $12 (including parking) if purchased in advance here.  Advance ticket sales end tomorrow at noon. If you buy at the door, entry to the fest is still $12 but you will have to pay the extra $4 for parking separately.  There will be races every half hour, so test your luck and bet on some races – you may even win and recoup your ticket cost!  AND,  for your entertainment, the Spazmatics will be performing as well.  All in all, I would say a great Saturday.

SuperSerious Comedy + Free Beer

Need plans for tomorrow night? Here ya go:

Not only do you get a rad comedy show, but unlike the 2 drink purchase minimums at the Improv and The Laugh Factory (making your $10-$20 ticket really more like $30-$45), this shows ticket price comes with FREE BEER.

And it’s not shitty beer either – it’s GOOD beer from Eagle Rock Brewery.

On top of that, there will also be food for purchase from the Wiloughby Road Food Truck,  sweets from J-Squared Bakery, music by DJ R-Rated (oh what a clever, hard-core, name), and of course, live comedy performances by Iliza Shleshinger, Jon Dore, Baron Vaughn, Dimo, and The Birthday Boys.

And it’s all just $10.

(Well, unless you procrastinate and wait to buy at the door – then it’ll be $15)

It’s an awesome deal. However, we recommend you take it one step further and flash-some-cash by upgrading your ticket with the All-In-One Holiday Ticket Special. For just $8 more, ($18 total) you’ll get the show ticket, the beer, a $5 voucher to the Willoughby Road Truck, a 1 item voucher for J-Squared, and a raffle ticket.

(To reserve your Holiday ticket special you’ll need to email info@superseriousshow.com)

Either way, it’s a good deal and a fun way to get drunk+fat+humorous on a Thursday night.

Pasadena Wine Fest

This must be the year for fests. We’ve been to beer fests, gourmet fests, food truck fests, and wine fests this year, nearly twice a month!

Obviously, Pasadena didn’t want to miss out on all this festy action and decided they’d join the party and hold a fest of their own: The Pasadena Wine Festival.

I love that they don’t even mention food in the title (though it will be there) – they just sell the wine. And with 125 different wines being represented there will definitely be lots of it!

.

Warning: at a similar Wine Fest (Taste of Beverly Hills) I experienced wine euphoria.  From the moment I walked in vendors were begging me to try not one, but 3-4 of their wines…

10 minutes later I was pretty well wine’d up (and no longer able to truly ‘taste’ anything I tried, let alone walk in a straight line).

So, learning from my mistakes, I recommend that you take it slow. Enjoy a couple sips, enjoy a couple bites, and maybe mix in some water in between. You’ll have a long day of tasting and you wouldn’t want to blow your load all on the first vendor!

Another Wine Tasting….This Time With Bacon!

A couple weeks ago we twittered (or do I say tweeted? I’m not sure, I still consider myself a Twitter novice) about the first wine tasting event at Domaine LA and now they are back with a second tasting that we thought was definitely worth of a post, especially (or maybe only) because it involved bacon.

Domaine is a fairly new spot, just a little shy of a year old, located right near California Chicken Cafe.  CCC + wine in one location? What more could one person need in life!….Probably some bacon. But don’t worry, there will be some on Sunday.

Ok, so on to the facts.  This Sunday is Domaine LA’s second wine tasting event.  The tasting will be held from 4-7pm, the perfect way to wind down a boozy weekend.  Tickets for the tasting are $15 and include 8 different wines from a variety of growers, hand picked by importers Denyse Louis and Joe Dressner.  8 wines for $15 is under $2 a taste, so definitely has our Finer Things stamp of approval.

AND to top it all off, the newly minted Lardon Truck, which if you haven’t heard is all about BACON and nothing else, will be parked on Mansfield from 3-7pm.   I have been wanting to hunt down this Lardon Truck for daaaaaaaaaays. I’m thinking a late lunch at CCC, some wine sipping and slurping, followed by some bacon.  I can’t think of a more perfect Sunday, can you?

Now, we know it’s only Wednesday but their first tasting was at capacity, so if you purchase your tickets today you are at least guaranteed a spot.  You can get your tickets now on Domaine’s website. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Cheap(er) Ways to Attend This Wknd’s Food Fests

This weekend there are a couple gourmet food fests going on – events that involve bottomless booze (our fav), gourmet bites from the city’s best restaurants, live music, and cooking demonstrations.

Obviously because these events offer so many wonderful, and normally pricey, things to enjoy – they are pretty expensive to attend. The events in question?:

.

The Taste of Beverly Hills (Sept 2nd – Sept 5th)

LA Times Food & Wine Fest (Sept 5th)

.

Both events are sure to be swanky, and for what they are offering we’re tempted to say they might even be WORTH shilling out the high price to enjoy all the amazing foods and booze.

BUT LUCKILY you don’t have to pay the full price because Goldstar & Home Run have some dealyos that will enable you to enjoy excessive amounts of food & booze, without excessively stretching your funds.

You Can Be a Weeeeener!

For those hitting up tomorrow’s Outdoor Cinema Food Fest screening of The Hangover, make sure you enter to win this freebie:

Trump International Vegas Package including:

  • 2 night stay in a one-bedroom suite
  • Spa treatments for 2 at The Spa at Trump
  • Dinner for 2 at DJT

But you gotta be there to win – so buy your tickets if you don’t have them.

Great opportunity to re-watch a hilarious movie, enjoy some tasty food truck fare, and possibly win a lux vacay!

(P.S. We LOVE Vegas, its one of the few spots where it’s totally socially acceptable for us to drink all day long…)

Taste of Marina Del Rey

We are on a relentless pursuit to keep you fat & happy every weekend. This weekend’s stuff-your-face food adventure?

.

TASTE OF MARINA DEL REY

When: August 7th & 8th, 11am – 10pm

Where: 4211 Admiralty Way, Marina Del Rey, CA 90292-5413

Tickets: $35 at online & at gate, or $17.50 on Goldstar!

What’s Included: Admission, Concerts, & 5 taste tickets usable at over 50 different local vendors

..

So this isn’t a ‘play a flat fee and stuff your face endlessly’ kinda event. It’s more like: get some food with your ticket price, but everything else will cost ya, which is why if you’re going we STRONGLY encourage buying your tickets for 1/2off via Goldstar.

Your ticket does get you entry to see some live acts though, including the Gin Blossoms, who I haven’t heard from or thought of since middle school – but damn I used to love slow dancing to ‘Til I Hear it from You’ in the Chinook Middle School gym.

Also, some of the vendors at the event are boozy, like the Wine Expo, so we can only hope that this means small plastic cups of Chardonnay will be available to enjoy along with our Villa Tacos or Arcadie Crepes.

.

The location looks perfect (by the water!) and it seems like the perfect opportunity to try some smaller restaurants we’ve never heard of before.

Outdoor Cinema Food Fest + GIVEAWAY!

(To skip my nostalgic story & go straight to the GiveAway details – scroll to the bottom of the page…)

.

When I was little my parents would take me and my brother to the drive-in movies on weekends.

We’d always pull up in Dad’s yellow Chevy pickup named Maurice & hook up to the drive-in speakers (all cars must have names – my current vehicle is ‘Edith’, as she’s an old dirty bitch).  Then we’d all pile in the bed of the truck, surrounded by giant pillows and pig out on snacks Mom made at home. I can’t be certain but I’d assume my ever-so-classy parents were enjoying a nice box of Franz as well.

Really – it was a great time.

Jealous of my childhood and want to enjoy a similar entertaining and cuddly time in LA? Hit up the Outdoor Cinema Food Fest this summer!

.

Every Saturday over the course of the summer (July 10th – August 28th) the Outdoor Cinema Food Fest will be showing a new feature film at a local LA park (see the schedule below). Even better than my childhood cheeze-its and peanut butter apple slices: the movies will be accompanied by a slew of food trucks & a wine bar to keep you fat, tipsy, & happy while you enjoy the show!

.

Tickets: $8 (Group Rate for 4+, $5/ea)

Times: Grounds Open 6pm, Show Starts at 8:30pm

.

Schedule

The full list of participating food trucks can be found online.

.

Food Truck Fix

Just another quick post today about an event this weekend where you will be able to indulge in some food truck grub.  Seems like there is a festival almost every weekend with food trucks!

This weekend you can find many of your favorite trucks – India Jones, Barbie Q’s, Cool Haus, and Frysmith to name a few – at the Silver Lake Jubilee.  This is not a foodie event but actually a 2 day festival featuring a TON of bands (and some comedy acts) and they will also have a beer garden – who could ask for more?, art installations and literary performances for the poet in you.  The event is Saturday and Sunday from 10a-10p, and tickets can be purchased for just $5 ($5!!! If you don’t have plans this weekend there is no reason to not go to this) at www.silverlakejubilee.com .
