Get Canned at Blue Palms

Tonight, and every single Wednesday in the foreseeable future, Blue Palms wants to get you canned. And by canned, we mean wasted on canned beer. Good canned beer. Good, wonderfully priced at half-off, canned beer.

If you have been living under a rock and haven’t heard of the amazing Blue Palms Brewhouse and its fantastic selection of beers, and its more recent lease/venue issues, then this is the time to check it out. And by ‘this is the time’, we mean tonight: Half priced canned beers from 5pm – 2am every Wednesday. You see those wonderful hours? Not just one hour, not just a few, but all damned night you can guzzle down inexpensive delicious canned beer. Well ain’t that a doozy.

Can’t make it tonight? Blue Palms has great pricing on their beers and a fantastic selection of brews so its definitely worth a visit regardless of what night of the week it is. That said, there are some things to sweeten the deal on other nights as well: $4 Beers on Happy Hour 5-6:30pm, Flat Bread Pizza Mondays, $4 Pint Night Tuesdays, and .35cent Wing Night Thursdays. They’re gilding a lily here, but who are we to turn down a good deal?

Specialty Flight Thursdays at Sunset Beer Co

Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.
-Dave Barry

what a nice cozy spot to get your beer on

Tonight, from 6-10pm get your beer on (and pizza, from a nearby truck, too if you so desire) with a specialty tasting at Sunset Brew Co. Four beers for $20. Every Thursday the flights are different, some featuring similar types of beer, some featuring versions of the same beer.

Each beer in tonight’s tasting flight comes from Stone Brewing Co. In fact, all four beers are technically the same beer: Double Bastard. But each tasting represents the beer at a different age: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011.

Yup, not just wine gets better with age, beer can too (or at least, get ‘different’…) And here is your chance to see what this lovely brew tastes like at its various stages of its life. Good price, good beer, good way to spend Thursday night.

Melgard Tuesday Night Trivia

As an overall group, our friends are very competitive. We like to partake in any form of activity which allows us to assert our superiority over one another, whether it be Mario Kart, Zoomie-Zoomie, Pool Olympics, or even Yahtzee. Most of these games involve alcohol, not by official rule of course, buy by our unspoken group by-laws. The king of such games is Trivia Night, and, being the queen of useless information, I’m especially fond of Trivia Nights. There’s one on Wednesdays at South in Santa Monica, another on Tuesdays at Caseys Downtown, but none more central to the group than Trivia Night at Melgard Public House on Melrose.

Tuesdays, Starting at 7:30pm

Trivia, Drink Specials, & Prizes for the Smarties

Melgard is pretty vague about what the actual drink specials are, but they already have great deals on beer (every beer on tap is $6, and if you’re smart you’ll order the Chimay, or my favorite Great White, and NOT the PBR.) Plus, prizes for being a winner? Something you can take home to forever remind your peers of your random-knowledge superiority? Love it.

If you show up before Trivia night, from 3-7pm, you can also take advantage of their happy hour. No specials on drinks, but every table gets a free cheese pizza with their beer or wine order. And the pizzas are really really tasty, made fresh on site with lots of ooey gooey cheese and a nice soft thin crust. We’ve learned the hard way that if you show up in a group of 10, you just get one pizza for your giant table (unless you ask REALLY nicely). But if you sit in groups of two, the ratio of pizza to person is much preferable.

On top of all this Melgard usually has a some good daily lunch specials for $12 that include salad or soup + entree + soda+tax+tip (yep tax & tip are INCLUDED) and they have a huge patio to soak up the sunshine, people watch the freaks on Melrose, and guzzle your beer(s).

Coming Attractions

Just last year we were talking amongst our friends, nursing our hangovers from the day before over brunch,  WISHING there were more nice sports/beer bars in Los Angeles. At the time it seemed all LA was good for was Clubs/Lounges and sleazy bars (not that we don’t love spots like Backstage Culver City – karaoke, drinks, Seahawks fans – what’s not to love?).

Now it seems nice sports bars and burger/beer joints are popping up everywhere around our LA neighborhood. If only we had the foresight, and funds, to open our own! With our expertise in booze and fun times we’d be gazillionaires if we owned a bar…

Here’s a few new spots opening in the next couple months you should keep your eyes out for:

* Melgard Public House (7505 Melrose Ave.) – Opening next week in former Louise’s Trattoria Spot. Easy American food, tons of beers on tap, and lots of flat screen TVs (From the guy who owns 3rd Stop and 1739 Public House)

* The Surly Goat (7929 Santa Monica Blvd) – Opening soon. Main focus of the Surly Goat will be craft beers – and tons of them.  (From the guy who started BoHo and Bar Delux, was expected to open in 2009 but, accordingly to EaterLA, ran into liquor license problems….)

* Name TBDLAist reports a new Gastropub is expected to open just north of Golden State on Fairfax in a few months. More details to come…

* Locals Sports Bar & Grill (5047 W. Pico) – Just Opened! TVs, Beer/Wine/Liquor, ‘Fresh’ Bar Food (Whatever that means…)

* Capitol City (1615 Cahuenga) – Opened Sept. 2009 in former Goa spot. Lots of TVs, 60 Beers on Tap + Wine + Full Liqour, Two Stories, and Dance Floor/DJ Set up at back outside patio.
